East Lochaber Community Trust

East Lochaber Community Trust

The East Lochaber Community Trust (the Trust), which is a company limited by guarantee, has been formed to benefit the community of East Lochaber, being the community council areas of Spean Bridge, Roy Bridge and Achnacarry; Fort William, Inverlochy and Torlundy; Caol; Kilmallie; Nether Lochaber; Glencoe and Glen Etive; Kinlochleven (the Community).

The East Lochaber and Laggan Community Trust was incorporated in 2016 to bring together the broad community to take forward a bid for the land which was owned at that time by Rio Tinto Aluminium. That bid was unsuccessful and the GFG Alliance took over the entirety and November 2016.

At the encouragement of the Scottish Government and the GFG Alliance, we continued to strive to make some settlement on community ownership and came close to receiving an offer in early 2019 but that proposal was not supported within the GFG Alliance, now Jahama Highland Estates.

Following staff changes we continued to engage and believed that we with making progress during 2021 but further staff changes occurred within Jahama.

During 2021 the community in Laggan decided that they were content with the current estate ownership and removed from the Trust.  Following the required vote in Autumn 2021 the name was changed to East Lochaber Community Trust in November 2021 and we strive to engage with Jahama, heartened by the expressions of encouragement at the time of the vote.

The domain name has been changed and Facebook and Twitter are being renewed.

We will continue to keep the community advised and meet when it is appropriate to do so.
